Blended Whisky Stratheden, 46% alc., 0.7L, Scotland
Stratheden is a blended Scotch whisky which enchants our senses with a smell that features notes of juicy oranges, oak wood, and vibrant tones of pineapple. Its taste is well defined, featuring flavours of caramel and popcorn, as well as hints of wood. The finish is long and fruity with accents of smoke.
The story of Straheden began in the past century, when almost 100 distilleries in Scotland were closed or destroyed, which meant almost half of the distilleries that ever existed in Scotland. The global economic decline, overproduction, and the two World Wars contributed to the loss of all those distilleries. As a result, many unique and venerable brands were lost to the world. The Lost Distillery company, which specialises in researching the distilleries which were closed indefinitely, revives and brings to light the tradition and consistency of these rare whiskies.
Located in the heart of the old commercial town of Auchtermuchty in Fife, the Stratheden distillery was founded in 1829 and, throughout its existence, had only one owner in the person of Alexander Bonthorne, who became one of Scotland’s oldest and most renowned distillers in Scotland. According to writer Brian Townsend, the Stratheden distillery used to be a veritable “malt dynasty”, a curious mix of customs and modern tradition. At present, although abandoned, the distillery is a historical monument protected by law.
