Unicum – The only liqueur made from over 40 plants.

Unicum liqueur is made from over 40 plants, and can be served as an aperitif or a digestif. It is produced by Zwack, based on a secret recipe. However, the 40-plant manufacturing process is only the first step, as it would not achieve the strong taste based solely on this formula – the drink is matured in casks for at least 4 months.

During the communist era, the Zwacks were exiled to New York and Chicago. During all this time, Unicum was still manufactured in Hungary, but based on a different recipe.

When the communists’ reign ended, the Zwacks returned to Hungary, and Unicum returned to the secret recipe, which they continue to use even today.
